The Center for Wooden Boats has partnered with Seattle retailer Captain's Nautical Supplies to operate the gift shop and online store. This relationship allows CWB to increase its selection of unique gifts and branded merchandise.
About Captains Nautical LLC
Captain’s is a marine supply company founded in 1897 by a German watchmaker named Max Kuner. From its original storefront in downtown Seattle, the Max Kuner Company outfitted ships bound for Alaska during the Klondike Gold Rush, and became a Seattle institution that grew alongside the marine and fishing industries. For 120 years, Captain’s has sold clocks, repaired sextants, stocked charts, swung compasses, and served mariners up and down the Pacific Coast.
Today, Captain’s provides charts, equipment, and services to recreational boaters, fishing crews, hikers, kayakers, tugboat companies, world cruisers, and adventurers of all kinds, as well as books, gifts, flags, binoculars, lamps, telescopes, and more. In 2015, Captain’s moved from its Interbay location to a historic building in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood. Captain’s is a long-time supporter of The Center for Wooden Boats, counting among its employees a former CWB board member and a previous CWB Gift Shop Manager.
Captain’s knows that CWB’s community cares deeply about supporting its programs and cultural resources in part through merchandise revenue. The operating agreement calls for sharing Gift Shop proceeds between CWB and Captain’s, with CWB providing the physical space and Captain’s providing the inventory.
This model allows both organizations to cover their costs while offering their best expertise to the partnership. Captain’s is well-versed in purchasing, inventory management, and other day-to-day storekeeping operations, while CWB brings an audience passionate about maritime heritage and exploring the Pacific Northwest. CWB anticipates a substantial increase in net gift shop income, and Captain’s anticipates increased market exposure as a result of this partnership.
