“Creating the 45th Anniversary poster for the Center for Wooden Boats was both an honor and a wonderful experience. It’s a challenge to highlight all of the important boats, buildings, programs and especially people who have taken part in the organization’s rich 45-year history, but I hope that every person associated with CWB can feel represented in some part of this design.
The title is hand-lettered in a traditional style, to suggest a hand-built boat that is both rugged and refined. The surrounding waters represent all that the Center has weathered through the years. The 45th Anniversary lettering and the swirling border are painted with gold to honor this very special occasion.
Creating the poster was a collaborative journey that began with an idea submission, moved through several versions and, I hope, landed in just the right place. CWB provided valuable ideas, information and feedback, highlighting those aspects of the CWB’s 45-year history to be present in the final design. Drawing from both the Center's and my own resources from various time periods, I created the pen and ink illustrations which eventually found their way into the arrangement you see today, linked by the waters of Lake Union and beyond.
Many thanks to the CWB for allowing me to be a part of this celebration.”
